September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The day honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. Public commemoration of this tragic and painful history and the ongoing impacts of residential schools is a part of the reconciliation process. For Indigenous Peoples and communities, this is a day of remembrance. For others, this is a day to generate important conversation, learn, and take action.
In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Elantis has donated $4,569.24 in support of Indigenous communities. These funds were contributed by Elantis employees, as well as corporate donations.
The funds will go to Indspire, an organization that disburses financial awards, delivers programs, and shares resources with the goal of increasing graduation rates for Indigenous students. Their resources serve educators, communities, rural areas, and other stakeholders who are committed to improving kindergarten to grade 12 Indigenous student success. You can learn more about the impact of these funds here.
Many Elantis employees also showed their support by wearing an orange shirt, in honour of the children who survived residential schools and in remembrance of those who did not. We encourage all to explore the history, the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and stories of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
By supporting organizations such as Indspire, standing up for diversity and inclusion, and educating ourselves on this tragic history, we live our core values to focus on people and to do the right thing.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their support of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
